Correction: our origin is Irene/Centurion, not Cape Town. River Lodge and Southern Camp still use the same gateway: Hoedspruit/Eastgate Airport (HDS) or Kapama’s private runway.
Best balance for a short family safari. From Irene it is about 46 km to OR Tambo on OSRM routing, then a direct ±1-hour flight to Hoedspruit/Eastgate. Kapama collects us at HDS and transfers us to either River Lodge or Southern Camp.
Most flexible and may be cost-effective for five people, but it uses up a big travel day. OSRM routing gives roughly 451 km from Irene to Hoedspruit/Eastgate area — around 6 hours before stops, traffic and lodge gate timing.
Premium/no-fuss route. Kapama advertises a branded Pilatus PC-12 direct fly-in option from OR Tambo or Wonderboom/Pretoria to Kapama’s private tarred runway.
Practical take: from Irene, the real comparison is fly JNB–HDS versus self-drive. For a 2-night Tamboti stay, I would avoid self-drive because the road time eats too much of the trip. For a 3-night Marula/Southern option, self-drive becomes more reasonable, but flying still preserves the holiday feel.
