- Premiumisation underway: Craft distillery movement growing, SA Brandy Route relaunched with 19 accredited Brandy Homes
- Key challenge: Domestic consumption declining (26.9M litres in 2023, down 5.8% p.a.), but premium segment growing
- Market projected to reach US$209.5M by 2030 (CAGR 4.3%)
1. History and Origins
The Beginning (1652–1700)
- 1652: Jan van Riebeeck establishes a refreshment station at the Cape for the Dutch East India Company (VOC). First vineyards planted at the foot of Table Mountain.
- 1659: First Cape wine produced from locally-grown grapes.
- 1672: Pieter Visser, an assistant cook aboard the Dutch ship De Pijl anchored in Table Bay, distills 1,164 litres of Cape wine into 126 litres of "brandewijn" (burnt wine) — the first recorded brandy production in South Africa.
- The VOC encouraged distillation: brandy concentrated wine into smaller volumes for long sea voyages, solving a practical cargo-space problem.
- By the 1700s–1800s, farmers were producing rough, often illicit "Cape Smoke" brandy — a raw, unaged spirit that became part of frontier culture.
Huguenot Influence (1688+)
- French Huguenot refugees settled in Franschhoek and Stellenbosch, bringing winemaking expertise including knowledge of distillation techniques that would shape Cape brandy's evolution.
- Abraham de Villiers — a prominent early Huguenot settler — pioneered winemaking in Franschhoek, though his direct role in brandy distillation is not fully verified in primary sources.
Modernisation (1800s–1920s)
- Jan van Ryn and sons built one of the foundational Cape brandy houses in the late 19th century, establishing the distillery in Stellenbosch that still operates today.
- René Santhagens imported Cognac-style Charentais/alembic know-how from France and is widely considered the architect of quality Cape brandy — his methods influenced the 1924 regulations.
- 1918: Ko-operatieve Wijnbouwers Vereniging (KWV) founded to stabilise the wine/brandy sector.
- 1924: Wine and Spirits Act establishes SA's brandy standards — requiring double distillation in copper pot stills and minimum 3-year maturation. This exceeded Cognac's standards from the outset.
- 1926: KWV bottles its first commercial brandy for export to the UK.
Modern Era
- 1984: South African Brandy Foundation (SABF) established as a statutory body to champion quality, support producers, and promote SA brandy globally.
- 1990s: Estate brandy production becomes legally possible, opening the door for boutique producers — Boplaas revived potstill distillation in 1989, Backsberg restarted in 1991.
- 1994: Boplaas releases the first estate brandy. Backsberg's inaugural 1994 vintage wins "Best Brandy in the World" at IWSC 1995.
- 2014: Regulations updated — 100% potstill distillate required for potstill brandy; vintage brandy must have 30–80% potstill content aged 8+ years.
- 2025: SA Brandy Route relaunched with 19 accredited Brandy Homes. Veritas and Platter's add brandy categories for the first time.
2. Production Methods
Grape Varieties
| Grape | Role | Character |
| Chenin Blanc (Steen) | Primary brandy grape | Natural acidity, fruit-forward, aromatic — gives SA brandy its distinctive ripe fruit character |
| Colombard | Second most-used | Lightness, floral notes, contributes elegance |
| Compare: Ugni Blanc | Cognac's primary grape | High acid, neutral — produces a drier, more austere spirit |
Double Distillation
- First distillation: Base wine enters copper Charentais-style pot still. Produces "low wine" at approximately 30% ABV.
- Second distillation: Low wine redistilled. The distiller selects the "heart" (coeur) — the desirable middle portion at approximately 70% ABV. Heads (foreshots) and tails (feints) are discarded or redistilled.
Why copper matters: Copper catalyses the removal of sulfur compounds during distillation, producing a cleaner, more refined spirit. The Charentais pot still design (same type used in Cognac) forces reflux, concentrating desirable aromatic compounds.
Maturation
- Minimum 3 years in oak barrels no larger than 340 litres
- French and American oak preferred. South African oak is unsuitable due to excessive porosity.
- The 340L barrel size maximises the spirit-to-wood contact ratio, accelerating flavour extraction compared to larger casks.
- Top expressions aged 10–30+ years: Van Ryn's AuRA 30 YO, KWV Nexus 30 YO
Three Regulated Categories
| Category | Potstill Content | Aging | ABV | Character |
| Potstill Brandy | 100% | 3+ years | 38% min | Rich, complex, for sipping neat |
| Vintage Brandy | 30–80% (balance: matured wine spirit) | 8+ years (all components) | 38% min | Elegant, well-aged, premium |
| Blended Brandy | 30% minimum (balance: column still spirit) | Potstill portion 3+ years | 40% min | Lighter, for mixing (with ginger ale, cola, fruit juice) |

"South African brandies are much smoother than Cognac, more in line with Spanish Brandies — offering softer, more approachable profiles at younger ages." — Roger Jones, The Buyer
The key differentiator: Chenin Blanc produces a fruitier, more aromatic base wine compared to Cognac's Ugni Blanc. Combined with SA's warmer terroir and stricter aging regulations, this creates a spirit that is naturally richer and more generous — what critics call "sunshine in a glass."
